Search engine optimization, paid search advertising, and digital banner advertising are among the most popular forms of ecommerce marketing, but they may not be the most effective for every business. A smart, data-driven plan could help some online retail businesses do better.

By year's end, retail marketers will have spent about $15.9 billion on pay-per-click ads, banner advertising, and other digital promotions, according to eMarketer. In fact, retailers, online and off, are likely to account for 21.9 percent of all U.S. digital advertising spending this year.

When retail marketers are not buying digital ads, they are probably worrying about SEO, which is still one of the most popular forms of ecommerce marketing.

Play the Contrarian

There is almost certainly merit to investing in both digital advertising and SEO, but these are not the only ways to grow an ecommerce business. Try playing the contrarian as you consider how your business invests in marketing.

A contrarian is a person who rejects or opposes popular positions. In our context, this implies that you don't like or want to use SEO or digital advertising. So as you plan for the rest of 2016 and beyond, ask yourself how you would improve your business without these.

Here are some suggestions to guide your thoughts.

Quality, Convenience, Value, and Customer Service

"The marketing and advertising industries are currently in a state of great confusion," advertising expert and 'Ad Contrarian' Bob Hoffman told a London audience. "In fact we are so confused we have lost touch with reality and also with average consumers — or as I like to call them, people."

"You cannot be taken seriously in any marketing or advertising organization if you suggest that the bulk of consumer behavior is perfectly obvious…asserting that the reason people buy most products is because they are tastier, prettier, cheaper, or are simply more readily available."

Hoffman's point may be that we forget that most of our customers have simple needs. They want a quality product, at a good value, and they want buying it to be easy.

Consider this, earlier this month Unilever, the multinational consumer goods company, agreed to buy online subscription retailer Dollar Shave Club for $1 billion. The five-year-old Dollar Shave Club has grown from no sales to more than $240 million in annual revenue, largely because its razors were cheap and convenient.

While wearing your marketing contrarian hat, ask yourself how you could improve your online store's quality, convenience, value, and customer service. If you improved these areas, how would your business be impacted?

Repeat Customers Are Worth More than New Ones

Existing customers are almost always more profitable than new customers. And this has always been the case.

In an often-cited paper from August 2012, Adobe reported that a shopper returning to make a second purchase from an online store will typically spend three times as much as a new customer. And when a consumer returns three or more times to buy from an online shop, that repeat customer will typically spend five times as much as a new customer on each purchase.

In 2014, Marketo cited a Bain & Company study, which found that repeat customers tend to spend 67 percent more than new ones. What's more, "it costs between six and seven times more to acquire a new customer than to retain ones you've already got."

SEO and digital advertising focuses on new customer acquisition. This is good. Every business wants to increase the total number of customers it has. But the ecommerce marketing contrarian knows that existing customers are worth more.

What can your ecommerce organization do to retain loyal shoppers?

Email Marketing Works Best

In February 2015, I wrote "Without Email Marketing, You're Probably Losing Sales." This is still the fact today. Email marketing is probably the single best thing an online retail business can do to drive sales.

Yet, it seems that the majority of ecommerce marketers do not segment, automate, or personalize email-marketing campaigns.

From the marketing contrarian's perspective, how can you invest in other forms of promotion when you have yet to make use of the most powerful tool you have. It is like digging a trench with a spoon whilst your backhoe sits idle.

Content Marketing Will Generate Profits

Consider, again, Dollar Shave Club. A few paragraphs back I noted the company was recently sold for $1 billion. While Dollar Shave Club certainly participated in many forms of advertising and promotion, it was content marketing that propelled its revenue.

In March 2012, the company posted a one-and-a-half-minute long video on YouTube. The entertaining pseudo-commercial generated more than 12,000 subscription orders in 24 hours.

Not everything your ecommerce store publishes will boost sales the way that this Dollar Shave Club video did, but the opportunity is there.

Ask your inner ecommerce marketing contrarian what sort of content you could produce if you redirected some of your other marketing investments. In the meantime, enjoy these videos.

Advertise Locally for New Customers

Digital advertising and SEO are far reaching. An online store in Boise, Idaho can sell to shoppers 10,000 miles away in Johannesburg, South Africa. But are folks in Johannesburg really the customers that a Boise-based ecommerce business can serve best?

If your warehouse is in Boise, Idaho, you can ship to Idaho residents via ground and expect it to arrive in a day or two. This means you can offer free shipping and compete with services like Amazon Prime.

Also, you likely understand the local market better than your distant competitors.

Last month, I wrote about how online stores could use direct mail to attract new ecommerce customers. As a contrarian ecommerce marketer, consider promoting your products to those customers nearest you. And consider using tactics your competitors might not be.

Measure Everything, Analyze Everything

As you remove your contrarian hat, remember to measure and analyze everything. Good marketing should be data-driven.

If you generate a lot of sales from direct mail, understand why and repeat the effort. If email helps you retain customers, figure out which emails work best. If banner ads boost your revenue, determine which creative does the best job.

The aim, after all, is constant improvement.

Chobani even saw a 9% increase in sales by utilizing SEM and SEO on multiple search engines.

    In their Q2 2016 earnings report their net income dropped by 34% from the previous period. They still are very profitable, showing a net income of $363.2 million but that profit continues to drop quarter over quarter as the company sees more and more scrutiny over their search ad practices.

    The Wall Street Journal reports Baidu's "advertising practices came under scrutiny after the death of a young man who undertook a cancer treatment he found through a Baidu online ad." "Shares in the company have fallen nearly 15% this year, and Baidu lowered its revenue forecast by nearly 10% ahead of its earnings report Friday in Asia," they added.

    Growth has been an issue for Baidu but here are the highlights the company wants you to read:

  • Mobile search monthly active users (MAUs) were 667 million for the month of June 2016, an increase of 6% year-over-year
  • Mobile maps MAUs were 343 million for the month of June 2016, an increase of 13% year-over-year
  • Gross merchandise value (GMV) for Transaction Services totaled RMB18.0 billion ($2.7 billion) for the second quarter of 2016, an increase of 166% year-over-year
  • Baidu Wallet activated accounts reached 80 million at the end of June 2016, an increase of 131% year-over-year
  • The company's total revenues in the second quarter of 2016 were $2.748 billion, a 10.2% increase from the corresponding period in 2015, and 16.3% year-over-year increase. While mobile revenue represented 62% of total revenues for the second quarter of 2016, compared to 50% for the corresponding period in 2015. Net income attributable to Baidu in the second quarter of 2016 was $363.2 million, a 34.1% decrease from the corresponding period in 2015. the compared reported.

    "Although Baidu is facing a public relations crisis, we don't think any other local search engine can replace the firm in the near term," Morningstar analyst Marie Sun wrote in a recent note. "As long as the Chinese government keeps Google out of mainland China, we believe Baidu will maintain its leading position."

    The company shared their outlook for the future saying they expect total revenues in an amount ranging from $2.714 billion to $2.796 billion for the third quarter of 2016, representing a decrease of 1.9% to an increase of 1.1%, year-over-year.

    Their stock was at $166 per share and dropped to a low of $157 after the earnings release was announced. It closed today at $159.60 a decrease of $6.03 or 3.64%.

    Search Marketing Is The Future, Right?

    I've always been fascinated by the constant evolution of search. It scares me to accept that I've never been able to get the full grasp of these changes. I couldn't sit still.

    My career was built on writing and consulting about SEM. I should be prepared for the future. I should know what's coming next. But, I don't.

    The future of search has me in a constant spin cycle.

    Do you feel this way? Bing has 133 million monthly searches. Google hit over 100 billion. That's a lot to take in. The good news is this hasn't stopped me (or others!) from digging into these changes.

    This past year working at SEJ has allowed me to explore new strategies to help explain the future of SEM. I discovered that I've been looking at the future of search all wrong. And, I think a lot of us have.

    What is the Future of Search?

    I've worked on over 100+ SEM clients. The majority of them focused only on increasing their rankings on Google.

    This is where I went wrong.

    I shouldn't be focused on increasing rankings in Google, creating more content, or building more links. I should be focused on the user.

    In 2016, we're seeing marketers approach this in different ways:

    Understanding searcher intent – Making it easy for searchers to get better search results by personalizing our content to answer queries and voice search.Exploring multiple search channels – Building a search strategy outside of Google that reaches your target audience on the platforms they live.

    For example, Confluent Forms worked with Michlin Metals to optimize for intent-based search. Confluent Forms altered the meta data and saw an upward spike in impressions, clicks and click-through rate, and position. And, they were even featured in a Google Answer Box. Optimizely increased conversions by 32% for Secret Escapes by matching user intent with expectation between landing page copy and PPC ads.

    And, let's not forget about the other search channels. Marin Software grew Sykes Cottage conversion volume on Bing by 259%. Hello Society increased referral traffic from 3,952 to 16,592 in one month on Pinterest.

    All of this is how I now understand search will work in the future. Yep, I was missing the whole point all along.

    In 2000, my main channels were paid search and organic search. Fast forward to 2016, to compete you must be on paid, organic, local, image, video, map, social, news, mobile, and voice search.

    Whew! That's a lot!

    Does this New Way of Search Marketing Work for Big or Small Brands?

    The short answer: Both.

    Businesses spend thousands of dollars on PPC and SEO campaigns each year looking for the right audience. Utilizing tools like Bing's Remarketing campaigns allows both big and small brands to benefit from targeting consumer buying behaviors for better ad conversions with minimal spend. AdWords also offers remarketing ads, so I'd analyzing both avenues before allocating your budget.

    For me, smaller brands with a limited budget see greater success on Bing because the cost-per-click has been lower. WordStream also saw an average of 33.5% cheaper CPC on Bing.

    In addition to advertising, businesses will also need to adapt to the new way users are searching. According to comScore, 50% of all searches will be voice searches by 2020. Voice search uses a more natural tone, which changes the search results.

    Tech Goliaths like Microsoft, Apple, and Google, are focusing on new digital assistants, like Cortana. Cortana (iOS, Android, Windows), has already seen 2.5 billion questions asked globally. Pretty crazy, huh? Digital assistants are transforming how searchers use mobile. Searchers are bypassing Google search and using apps or voice search for their queries.

    This means more opportunities for marketers to influence consumers and measure the impact of search on other channels.

    Takeaways

    It seems to me that the next generation of search will rely on helping businesses personalize their brand to reach a very niche audience. There is a whole new side for SEM marketers to explore — and potentially some awesome benefits, too!

    Brands can expand their reach by utilizing multiple search engines.The content based on user intent and conversational language will have a greater impact.Investing in personalized ad campaigns can bring in higher conversions.

    For all the work we do with perfecting our strategies, perhaps these coming years bring us the opportunity to engage on a deeper level more meaningful level, not only with our audience but with our brands too.

    17 useful search marketing stats from Merkle̢۪s Q2 2016 report

    This morning, Merkle released their quarterly Direct Marketing Report, ahead of Google's own Q2 earnings announcement and it makes for a bumper stat-filled reading.

    Of particular note are the revelations that:

  • Google search spending growth has slowed to 22% as CPCs fall 9%
  • Desktop PLA growth rate jumps while mobile growth is strong but slowing
  • Shopping Ads traffic from Google image search and Yahoo surges
  • Google's expanded text ads have had only a modest impact
  • The full report (registration needed) covers the latest trends in paid search, organic search, social media, display advertising, and comparison shopping engines, so let's cherry-pick some of the highlights…

    Paid Search
  • Advertiser spending on Google paid search grew 22% Y/Y in Q2 2016, a slight deceleration from 25% growth in Q1.
  • Click growth increased slightly to 34%, but CPCs fell 9%.
  • Spending growth for Google text ads slowed to 10% Y/Y as CPC growth for brand keywords fell from 10% in Q1 to 0% in Q2.
  • Google Shopping Ad spending growth rose to 43% as an influx of partner traffic bolstered total click volume.
  • Combined spending on Bing Ads and Yahoo Gemini search ads fell 17% Y/Y as click declines continued to worsen.
  • Bing Product Ad spending fell for the first time since the format's launch, likely the result of Yahoo moving to show more Google PLAs.
  • Phones and tablets produced 53% of all paid search clicks in Q2, the same rate as a quarter earlier, but up 12 points from a year earlier. Google's share of clicks from mobile increased slightly to just over 57%

    Organic Search & Social
  • Organic search visits fell 7% Y/Y in Q2, down from 11% Y/Y growth a year earlier, as organic listings face increased competition from paid search ads, particularly on mobile.
  • Mobile's share of organic search visits rose to 46%, but that still lags behind the 53% of paid search clicks that mobile produces, as well as the 47% share that mobile produced for organic search a year ago.
  • Google produced 86% of all organic search visits in the US and 90% of mobile organic search visits.
  • Google's share of mobile organic search has increased by nearly two points in the past year.
  • Social media sites accounted for 2.8% of site visits in Q2 2016, with Facebook producing 63% of all site visits driven by social media.
  • Comparison Shopping Engines
  • The eBay Commerce Network commanded a majority of advertisers' comparison shopping engine (CSE) spending for the first time in Q2. Along with Connexity, the two dominant CSE platforms accounted for 97% of all CSE ad spending.
  • Advertiser revenue produced by eBay Commerce Network and Connexity listings grew by 33% and 23% Y/Y respectively; however, the two platforms combined for less than 10% of the revenue produced by Google Shopping Ads, among advertisers participating in all three platforms.
  • Display Advertising
  • Total display advertising spending grew 62% Y/Y, driven by very strong results from Facebook, where Merkle advertisers increased their investment by 121% Y/Y.
  • Retargeting accounted for 62% of all display spending in Q2.
  • The Google Display Network (GDN) also delivered spending growth, with advertisers seeing its share of total Google ad spending increase to 12%.
