Search engine giant Google has confirmed that it has decided to shut down its engineering offices in Russia and will be moving its engineers out of Russia soon.
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the decision taken by the Russian government to tighten Internet regulations has affected the functioning of the tech firms and it has forced the Mountain View-based firm to close its engineering offices in Russia.
As per the recent regulations of Russian government, the overseas tech companies doing business in the country are required to store users' personal data exclusively on data centers within the country rather than in data centers across the world; thereby underscoring increasingly restrictive laws with regard to Internet freedom. The Internet firms which do not comply with the new regulations could face penalties.
The new rules are scheduled to take effect in 2015. Since Google wants to increase is business investment in Russia next year, a Google representative said: "We are deeply committed to our Russian users and customers and we have a dedicated team in Russia, working to support them."
