SEO: How to Quickly Reverse a Traffic Downtrend

During a website redesign, re-platform, or domain change, it is not uncommon to see a reduction in organic search traffic. The panic generally starts weeks after trying one thing after another and the traffic does not return.

In this post, I'm going to walk you through a process I use to accelerate the recovery of this painful problem.

Identify the Root Causes

Instead of running a website through a full search-engine-optimization checklist, which generally takes a lot of valuable time, I prefer to focus on the 20 percent of glitches that are likely causing 80 percent of the problem. This approach allows for faster, incremental recovery, leaving time to address the other issues later.

When organic traffic drops, it's typically caused by fewer pages performing, or fewer visitors per page, or both. I first try to determine which of these is the issue. If there are fewer pages performing, there potentially are indexing problems. If we have fewer visitors per page, the pages might be weak in content. If we have both issues, there could be page reputation problems — i.e., fewer quality links to the site. Duplicate content and stale content can both dilute page reputation, as can a link penalty.

Using this framework, one can isolate the problems that are likely hurting traffic. Common errors that I've seen are:

  • Missing, incorrect, or incomplete URL mappings — lower page reputation;
  • Massive URL consolidations leading to a smaller site — less content;
  • New infinite crawl spaces (explained below) — fewer pages indexed;
  • New infinite scrolling that is not SEO friendly — less content;
  • Backlink penalties — lower page reputation.
  • And here are the key places I quickly collect evidence:

  • 404 errors in Google Search Console;
  • Landing page organic traffic report in Google Analytics;
  • Index status and XML sitemaps reports in Google Search Console;
  • URL parameters settings in Google Search Console;
  • Latest links report in Google Search Console.
  • In the next steps, each potential problem is a thesis to validate or invalidate. For this, I use data science tools to prepare the evidence collected and explore it with data visualization.

The most important part of this technique is developing the intuition to ask the right questions. Those questions should determine what data and evidence to collect, and how to process it and visualize it.

What follows is an actual investigation, with real customer data, to understand this data-driven framework.

    Evidence Collection Example

I recently helped a brand-name retailer during a re-platform and redesign project, in preparation for the 2016 holiday season. We started advising the company in June, and the new site launched at the beginning of October. But the site started to experience a downtrend in organic search traffic before then, at the beginning of September, as year-over-year organic traffic was down approximately 20 percent.

The client was hoping to reverse this trend with the new site design.

We carefully planned everything. We mapped — via 301 redirects — all of the old URLs to the new ones. We did multiple rounds of testing and review on the staging site.

Note that we did not change title tags before the launch. I prefer not to change title tags during redesigns. Instead, I prefer to change them a couple of weeks afterwards. This is because, in my experience, title tag changes can result in re-rankings. So it is better to alter them in a more controlled fashion, so you can roll back the changes if they don't improve performance.

But, regardless, a couple of weeks after the launch, organic traffic dropped even further, by roughly 40 percent over the previous year. But, thankfully, we did identify the problem.

Using our framework, we asked if we are losing pages, visitors per page, or both? We gathered the data and then graphed it, to visualize.

The number of visitors (users) per page, shown in yellow in the lower portion of the graph, remained relatively constant. But the number of pages indexed, in the blue line, decreased. Fixing the problem in November 2016 reversed the trend.

The number of visitors (users) per page, shown in yellow in the lower portion of the graph, remained relatively constant. But the number of pages indexed, in the blue line, decreased. Fixing the problem in November 2016 reversed the trend. Click image to enlarge.

The findings were obvious. In the graph, above, even during the downtrend there is a nearly flat number of visitors per page (see the lower, yellow line). But the pages that received traffic (shown in the blue line) dramatically dropped.

This key data analysis and visualization saved valuable time. I didn't need to look at content issues, but, instead, I could focus on indexing. We were able to confirm indexing problems while looking at Index Status in Google Search Console, as shown below.

Note an initial bump in indexed pages when the new site launched, but then the subsequent slide, and finally the correction bump at the beginning of November. <em>Click image to enlarge.</em>

Note an initial bump in indexed pages when the new site launched, but then the subsequent slide, and finally the correction bump at the beginning of November. Click image to enlarge.

Next, we needed to determine why Google was dropping pages. So we looked into Google Search Console URL parameters — Search Console > Crawl > URL Parameters — to find indications of an infinite crawl space.

That topic, infinite crawl spaces, merits an explanation. Infinite crawl spaces often appear in websites with extensive databases — such as most ecommerce platforms — and causes search-engine robots to continue fetching pages in an endless loop. An example of this is faceted or guided navigation, which can produce a near limitless number of options. Infinite crawl spaces waste Googlebot's crawl budget, and could prevent indexing of important pages.

In this example, however, we didn't have an infinite crawl space. If we did, we would see parameters with far more URLs than realistically exist on the site.

We then checked the 404 errors in Google Search Console, at Search Console > Crawl > Crawl Errors. We were surprised to see URLs as 404 errors that we had correctly mapped. We clicked on the pages reported as errors, and as we expected the correct pages redirected and loaded correctly. They didn't appear to be 404 errors.

Google Search Console reported URLs as 404 errors that had been correctly mapped. <em>Click image to enlarge.</em>

Google Search Console reported URLs as 404 errors that had been correctly mapped. Click image to enlarge.

I then opened Google Chrome Developer Tools to repeat the same test. But, this time I checked the response from the web server. Bingo! The page loaded with the right content, but it reported to browsers and search engines that it was not found.

Google "protects" 404 pages for 24 hours. After that they are dropped from the index. We worked with the development company, which corrected the status codes. Later, we also found another problem with the redirects where they were not preserving redundant parameters from the old URL, which affects paid search tracking and other marketing initiatives. All issues were promptly resolved. After waiting for Google to re-crawl the site, the organic traffic began to increase. Ultimately, organic traffic was well above 2015 levels.

In short, if you are experiencing a downtrend in organic search traffic, do not panic. Adopt a scientific framework, such as I've described in this post. Isolate the broad reason for the decline, and then start investigating, to fix the problem.

TRIBECA, N.Y., Jan. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- fishbat is a leading Internet marketing company which combines proven digital marketing strategies that include search engine optimization (SEO), digital ads, and social media optimization (SMO) to help businesses increase profits and expand brand awareness.

For e-commerce businesses, getting your brand and products in front of as many people as possible requires using a variety of channels. Relying on the website alone will leave a lot of money on the table. Social media channels that include e-commerce, such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and more place products in front of a much wider audience than the website could generate on its own. As online shopping continues to take more market share each year, sites that are designed specifically for e-commerce are growing in popularity as well. Digital Marketing Agency, fishbat, shares three platforms to add to your e-commerce portfolio.

  • Magento. Magento is rich in features, from catalog management to product bundling, and upsell features to emailed wish lists. Magento is a powerful e-commerce platform to use for business growth and providing a superb user experience. This all-encompassing e-commerce site handles marketing, promotions, conversion tools, site management, as well as search engine optimization. The many SEO features provided by Magento gives businesses expansive exposure and growth potential through better search engine ranking and visibility.
  • Shopify. Shopify offers retailers a fully-hosted, and cloud-based, site that integrates with all IT platforms in a completely customizable environment. Whether using Shopify for a specific product line's exposure or boosting overall sales, the platform makes it easy by handling a lot of the time-consuming tasks that go along with managing an online commerce site. Businesses are notified when an order is placed so that it can be shipped promptly and can also keep track of where in the process they are on the site. Shopify integrates with fulfillment services, so if a business is shipping product in bulk to a fulfillment center, Shopify can notify them directly to handle the shipment.
  • Volusion. Volusion is well known for being an easy-to-manage e-commerce platform with a lot of design flexibility. The site also provides tools for e-marketing, such as a site map to assist SEO. Volusion includes features such as a built-in coupon generator, gift certificates, quantity discount generation, and a social store builder, which allows you to market the product directly on other social channels that link back to Volusion.
  • fishbat is a full-service online marketing company and social media agency dedicated to connecting all types of businesses with their target audiences in the most effective and efficient way. Google’s Possum Update Affects Organic Traffic

    Google's Possum Update

Some of the most read articles on SEO community are about Google's Algorithm changes. Google's modifications to its search algorithm is something that all search engine optimizers have to keep track of. As Google hardly announces anything before the actual release, things might go wrong at any point and therefore, good marketers never take chances.

The newest one of the updates or at least one of the new ones in town is the Possum update from Google. This update clearly changed the landscape of the local search engine algorithm and the way people used to rank sites locally.

If you are an international search engine optimizer and if you are trying to rank your website for the whole world, you probably do not need to worry about this as much as some brick and mortar shop does.Google's PossumAnyway, in this article, we are going to help you understanding everything you need to know about the Possum algorithm update.

Now, the first thing that you should know is that Google does not call this update the Possum Algorithm update. In fact, they do not call this update anything. They did not even really announce that they had an update about their local search method. Though there is no official brand name of this update like some others, local SEO marketers call it the Possum Update.

This was launched in September, 2016 and within a month, it completely changed the way businesses were ranked in Google.

So, the ranking basically only affected the local searches and the Google map results. Previously, there were a lot of spamming on these sections as there is a rumor that Google always ignored working on those sections. With this update, Google wanted to make sure that no spam is getting ranked on these precious spots.Google Possum Algorithm UpdateUnlike the main Google updates for the ranking, Google does not really come up with a lot of updates for local results. Therefore, this was a big thing for SEO agencies as SEO agencies mostly work on local SEO.

What did Possum do to the businesses that were ranked for different terms? Well, it did a few things.

First, businesses that were not actually located within the area that you are searching on Google, they were removed. So for example, previously, if you were searching for Plumbers in Texas, you would receive results of Plumbers who were not in Texas. That is now gone and you will now only see plumbers or websites related to plumbing that are based in Texas. That is a big one.

Second, many websites saw a huge jump on the search engine. They quickly moved to the first page without even worrying twice. Why did that happen? That's because they didn't know that they were optimized. That might sound weird but that is exactly what happened. Suddenly websites started to rank on the first page from 10th and 15th pages.

Third, if you had duplicate content on your business website to simply rank for that keywords, you were doomed. Google hates plagiarism and this actually is the same case on all Google algorithms. Whenever Google finds you plagiarizing, Google will go ahead and kill your website. That is exactly what they did with the business websites. Plagiarism does not always mean content though. As Search Engine Land mentioned, even if you had multiple business directory submissions on different websites, you were doomed.

Also, when Google saw that multiple businesses had the same business address, Google concluded it as if they were trying to rank without actually owning a physical location. There is no scope for Google to actually verify your business location and therefore, companies saw a difference in their rankings.Possum updateNow, there is an off topic which is not directly related to the Possum update but we wanted to tell you is that there is a high chance Google will start verifying the location of your business. Google already does that for the Adsense account holders which is the ad platform of Google. The method will be a simpl e pin verification where Google sends a letter to the address of your business location with a Pin in it that you will use to verify your address.

Therefore, if you are trying to be unique and fool around Google, make sure that you are careful about future updates.

On Page SEO is almost dead for local businesses that are trying to rank locally for different search terms. Yes, you might have heard On-Page SEO is everything but here is the nerd shock, it is not! Where On-Page SEO is still very important for different blogs, it will not give you a rank boost anymore if you are a business and trying to grow locally. It is more of an Off-Page SEO game these days.

Though there is no exact number, according to different sources, around 64% of business websites were affected with the Possum update of Google. Google is now storing more data than ever before. If you just do a business search on Google with something like "dentists near me" for example, you will not only see websites of dentists, but you will see their phone number and location on the map too without going to any of those websites. Google now shows it on the first page openly.

Google always wanted to provide you the information you need within the quickest possible time and it looks like the Possum update is exactly what they needed to make that happen. Google will keep on experimenting with their search listing and the methods that they use to rank sites. But it looks like Google is getting smarter and smarter as the days go by.

Where things might seem a bit tougher even for real businesses with real locations, you will not have to bear this problem for a long time. With address verification on the way, Google will quickly be able to understand what is a real business and what not to rank based on their location.

When it comes to business marketing, there are several things we can learn from restaurants and how they've evolved over time. As business owners and managers, it is our responsibility to grow our businesses by utilizing effective marketing strategies.

Part of that business growth comes from takings risks while minimizing losses. In this article, we'll go over several key restaurant marketing principles and how they could apply to your business as well.

    Diversify Traffic Sources

Not too long ago, restaurants mainly depended on one traffic source – dine in customers who specifically came to sit down and eat. But restaurants have quickly dived into trying to expand into other traffic sources as well such as take out, drive through, delivery, online orders, catering, and so on.

Just like restaurants have done recently, one of the key things behind your marketing strategy should be to diversify your traffic sources too.

That means if you are just looking for SEO services, you should stop and re-think what you're trying to accomplish. Instead of trying to find an SEO agency to help you with SEO, find a full-service marketing agency.

Full-service marketing agencies can help you with much more than SEO. They are usually knowledgeable in pay per click, social media, press releases, and many other marketing mediums. They can create a marketing plan for you that will focus on specific traffic sources that will be effective for your business. SEO services itself can take a long time to produce any meaningful results, so can your business really afford to only depend on SEO for marketing?

    Service Or Product Pricing Strategies

When it comes to pricing your services or products, you will be surprised to know that pricing changes can effect your business quite a bit. If you think about it, you probably have competitors, so your customers don't need to buy your services or products. They usually do it because of your unique selling proposition, and sometimes that can mean more relevant pricing.

Restaurants have several pricing strategies they use. One of the main ones is individual pricing, in which each food item is priced and bought separately. If you want a steak entrée meal and a mashed potatoes side, you simply pay for each one. This is the most common pricing method businesses use. You sell each service or product individually.

Another method is grouping multiple food items into one "meal" and selling it for one main price. The advantage of this method is that you generate more revenue per customer. Depending on how your profit margins look, this could drastically boost your revenue.

For example, if you are selling t-shirts and hats and majority of the customers only buy a t-shirt, that means if you add a hat in the t-shirt sale for an extra fee (such as $5), you will generate $5 more per each t-shirt order. As long as you are making a profit on that hat, it's still better to move product than have it sit in your storage for a long time.

And finally one of my favorite pricing methods is the buffet-style method. This is where a customer pays one price and they get to eat as much as they can. The reason this method works so well is because it helps you offer a lower price, which makes it available to a larger audience.

For example, in a popular buffet chain Golden Corral, customers pay about $12.99 for a dinner meal. Although that seems cheap, you have to think how much food an average person can actually consume. Sure some people will eat $30 worth of food, but most people are likely to eat less than half of how much they pay.

Using that example, can you try to create a similar pricing strategy for your business? Can you bundle several products or services together and just charge one higher fee? One advantage of that is if the customer does not use a specific service, they still pay you for it regardless. And you didn't really have to upsell 10 different things.

"All you can ____" type of deals can help increase the perceived value your business offers.

    Performance-based Incentives

And finally we have performance-based incentives. In the restaurant industry, most of the employees that deal with customers directly such as waiters, waitresses, and bartenders are paid a low base wage with tips as an incentive to provide a good service.

Although you can use that method for your employees, specifically sales people, I'm suggesting to try using this from a marketing perspective such as affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is a way to get new clients by having other marketers, bloggers, etc. promote your services and for each successful lead or sale, you pay them a specific amount as a commission.

Almost 90% of advertisers that use affiliate marketing think it is very important to their overall marketing strategy. So there is no reason why your business cannot look into utilizing it as well.

Alphabet : Dapa Marketing Reveals the Most Innovative Way to Company Growth

London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/26/2017 -- Dapa Marketing is a leading marketing agency aiding companies in expanding their business and creating more opportunities for growth via onsite visibility. dapa specialists claim that the most effective marketing opportunity is search engine optimisation (SEO) to gain more leads via keyword searches on search engines.

SEO involves using a variety of techniques to grow a company's online visibility by targeting keywords likely to be searched by potential clients, and attaining the most forefront positions on the search results.

Search engine optimisation has been a growing trend for a number of years, and is now one of the most recognised tactics for marketing. SEO has proved to be of high worth to companies such as dapa Marketing themselves, who rank in first position for all their most relevant keywords, and claim that this has been one of the main contributors to their success in the industry so far.

It is common knowledge that most online endeavours start with a keyword search on a search engine such as Google. In order to get in the top positions of Google, it is important to employ the right tactics, and it is often necessary to get professional companies such as dapa Marketing involved. This is because the complexities of Google rules and regulations are ever-changing, and when done wrongly, can result in penalties for a website, for example a website may not be allowed to rank on Google for a certain period of time.

SEO can be of great benefit to a company who wishes to build up their online presence. Research has suggested that 75% of search engine users never scroll past the first page when searching for a keyword or search term. What's more, nearly 80% of search engine users choose to ignore the paid Google Ads which appear at the top of the search results page, opting instead to click on the natural search results. From these statistics, it is clear to see that Google can provide the key to online business success, but paying for top positions via Google Ads just won't cut it in terms of major search engine success.

Dapa Marketing are the biggest team of SEO specialists in the region, offering SEO services to a multitude of companies all over the region. Their success in the industry along with their experience in helping others with their onsite endeavours supports their beliefs that SEO is the way forward with marketing success.

About Dapa marketingDapa marketing is a leading SEO company based in Northamptonshire, working with clients all over the region. dapa have been excelling in SEO services for over a decade, working with small one person businesses all the way up to global organisations to provide full SEO support with both offline and online materials.

The social media marketing checklist your business needs in 2017

As social media marketing becomes more challenging and time-consuming, it's time to get more organised when managing your brand's social presence.

It's not easy handling a brand's social presence, but its successful management can lead to great results. Social networks keep growing and they are heading into a more mature phase, which means that the challenges grow for every brand that tries to stay competent.

There are many reasons for a brand to invest in social media marketing and the results depend on the set goals:

  • Increase awareness
  • Reach a new audience
  • Boost engagement
  • Increase traffic to the site
  • Explore new business opportunities
  • Gain new leads
  • Work with new clients
  • No matter what goals you set for the new year, you still need to stay on top of your brand's social media marketing and the right checklist may help you with all the tasks you need to do at the beginning of the year.

    Brainstorming

This is the initial stage that you'll think of all the new ways that can boost your social media marketing.

  • Explore the latest trends and see if any of them fits in your own strategy
  • Learn more about the new platforms or examine whether the old ones are still suitable for your audience
  • Be creative and think outside the box
  • Come up with new content ideas and experiment with them on each platform
  • Ask for help from other team members to broaden your perspective
  • Planning

Right after your brainstorming session, it's time to evaluate your planning to see whether it's effective enough to help your social media marketing.

  • Go back to your content calendar and see whether it was effective enough to use it frequently
  • What needs to be improved to the existing content calendar?
  • Decide on the channels you're using. Should you add new ones?
  • Examine whether the frequency of the content has been effective up to now
  • Organise your goals and your KPIs
  • Do you know how to justify your social marketing efforts?
  • Implementation

Now you're ready to check the practical aspect of your social media marketing. The evaluation of the implementation phase helps you understand whether your plan has been successfully in action.

  • Are you happy with the way the posts are published?
  • Is the content calendar followed?
  • Is the engagement the one you expected?
  • Are you replying to the users' comments?
  • Are you monitoring your brand's social accounts?
  • Do you use all your social accounts consistently?
  • How is the collaboration between the team?
  • Is there a plan to deal with urgent situations?
  • When was the last time you dealt with a crisis and how can you avoid another one?
  • Do you need to use social media for customer service?
  • Measurement

The last but still important stage in the evaluation of a social media marketing plan is to examine whether the measurement is effective.

  • Start by going back to your initial goals. Are these met? Are they realistic?
  • Keep your social reports up-to-date and prepare them for the year ahead
  • Check each platform's native analytics to stay updated on their insights
  • Use your own analytics platform to have an overview of your social media marketing performance
  • Find the best performing platforms and raise the expectations in the new year
  • Find the platforms you need to focus on and come up with new content ideas to improve their performance
  • Plan the year ahead with new KPIs
  • Consult with the team on the best ways to track the KPIs
  • Align social media marketing KPIs with your wider marketing strategy
  • Although the checklist and the questions you need to answer seem to be time-consuming, the actual process is faster than what you think. This can even be an annual task, helping you create a successful social media marketing strategy, with a clear plan, goal and measurement. You can still add it to your new year's resolutions.

Five most interesting search marketing news stories of the week

Welcome to our weekly round-up of all the latest news and research from the world of search marketing and beyond.

This week, Amazon is wooing Prime subscribers with a new, exclusive credit card, brand interest in Snapchat may not be as high as it seems, and the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo is on the up-and-up, reaching a record of 14 million anonymous searches in one day.

Amazon unveils new credit card exclusive to Prime members

Since the launch of Amazon Prime as an express shipping service in 2005, Amazon has continued to add benefits to its exclusive subscription service in a bit to retain existing subscribers and lure new ones.

The latest of these is the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, a new credit card exclusive to Amazon Prime members, which offers a hefty 5% cashback on all Amazon purchases, as well as a 1-2% cashback on other types of purchase, and a $70 gift card to new cardholders once they're approved.

Al Roberts covered the news for ClickZ this week, looking at how Amazon is aiming to outdo major retail rival Costco with the new card, in its bid to become the go-to retailer in the U.S. and elsewhere.

More brands sign up for Snapchat, but not all are active

Snapchat is currently preparing to make an Initial Public Offering that could be the largest in the social media space since Facebook's in 2012.

But although Snapchat has made a number of moves to tempt businesses into marketing on its platform, such as adding ecommerce features, redesigning its Discover platform to appeal to publishers, and adding Facebook-like audience targeting, a new report by research firm L2 has revealed that many businesses still don't know what to do with Snapchat.

According to L2, many of the brands that are signed up to Snapchat have "struggled to produce content for the platform", and the amount of active brands on Snapchat dropped from 70% to 67% between January and October. Al Roberts reported on the news for ClickZ this week and assessed whether Snapchat will be able to build up the momentum to challenge Facebook's social media dominance.

Why the world's major brands are making the switch to their own web extension

To date, more than 550 of the world's largest brands have applied for their own Top-Level Domains, or TLDs – the part of a URL that appears after the dot (e.g. .com or .net).

Given the sizeable application fee of almost $200,000 USD, it stands to reason that most of the brands using these TLDs are big hitters like Apple, Google, Walmart and Nike, using them to create more simplified and memorable navigation that harks back to the days of Windows 2000. Tereza Litsa looked at how the new extensions work, and what the benefits are for both marketers and consumers.

eBay to launch authentication service for high-end merchandise

eBay is one of the web's foremost ecommerce pioneers, facilitating the purchase of hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of goods every year. But one of its biggest sources of friction relates to the sale of counterfeit goods, particularly high-end and luxury goods such as jewellery, fashion and handbags.

For years, eBay has offered a Verified Rights Owner programme which lets brands report suspected fakes, but late last week it announced that it will be launching a new programme, eBay Authenticate, which is specifically targeted at sellers of luxury items. Due to roll out later this year, eBay Authenticate will allow high-end sellers to have professional authenticators evaluate their items for an as-yet unspecified fee. DuckDuckGo hits 14 million searches in one day

The privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo yesterday announced two major milestones to its blog: at the end of last year, it surpassed a cumulative total of 10 billion searches served, with more than 4 billion of those carried out in 2016 alone. And earlier this month, DuckDuckGo reached an all-time high of 14 million searches in just one day.

DuckDuckGo hailed this news as a success for the spread of privacy online, pointing out a Pew Research Study which reported that 40% of users believe their search engine shouldn't retain information about their search activity. It's definitely a huge achievement for a small, independent search engine like DuckDuckGo, which doesn't retain any information about its users or sell it on to advertisers, and whose features are largely community-created and crowdsourced.

Its presence mostly spreads by word of mouth, and yet DuckDuckGo's traffic is growing faster than ever, which could indicate that more and more people are starting to take an interest in privacy and anonymity online.
