9 Stats That Will Make You Want to Invest in Content Marketing

stats-invest-content-marketing

Editor's note: Because proving the value of content marketing continues to be necessary, Julia McCoy updated her 2016 post with some fresh stats and perspective.

Content marketing has been moving at the speed of light in recent years.

Why?

Consumers are fed up with in-your-face advertising and sales tactics that feel cheap, slimy, or underhanded. Instead, they're attracted to authenticity, transparency, and friendliness in a brand.

The advent of the internet and social media has a lot to do with this. These channels help consumers pick and choose exactly which brands they interact with. If people don't want to see your ads, they'll click away – it's as simple as that.

As such, marketers have discovered that they need to approach the consumer differently. We can't serve up the same old ads anymore and expect results similar to 30 or 40 years ago. Instead, we must add value to consumers' lives to make them want to give us the time of day.

Hence, the fundamentals behind content marketing – relationship-building, focusing on the customer versus the brand – were born in response.

This approach – oh boy, does it work.

For some excellent proof, let these nine statistics do the rest of the talking. They really do speak for themselves. Prepare to persuade.

1. Pit content marketing against paid search, and content marketing gets three times the leads per dollar spent.

Paid search has been touted as the be-all, end-all for cost-effectiveness. However, a recent study by Kapost (in collaboration with Eloqua) proves the opposite.

When the two are pitted against each other, content marketing has both lower up-front costs and deeper long-term benefits.

#Contentmarketing has lower up-front costs & deeper long-term benefits than paid search, says @JuliaEMcCoy. Click To Tweet

As time goes on, content marketing builds its own momentum – no extra dollars required. Meanwhile, paid search needs a continual cash flow to keep getting results.

2. Content marketing generates over three times as many leads as outbound marketing and costs 62% less.

That's right. Content marketing is not only cheaper than outbound marketing; it also generates more leads.

#Contentmarketing costs 62% less than outbound marketing & generates 3x as many leads, says @demandmetric. Click To Tweet

Outbound marketing is the old way of doing business. Outbound marketing consists mainly of promotional messages that try to tell consumers how great a brand, product, or service is. These ads are served to consumers whether they want to see them or not. These ads are pushy, interruptive, and intrusive.

Turns out, people today generally don't respond to this type of product-pushing. That's because there are other ways to engage with brands – better ways (*cough* content marketing *cough*).

3. In 1984, a person saw an average 2,000 ads/day. By 2014, they saw around 5,000.

Two words: Ad. Overload.

How are people dealing with this overload, where they're bombarded with ads daily?

Two more words: Ad blockers. More than 615 million devices now have ad-blocking software, according to PageFair 2017 Global Adblock Report.

615 million devices now use #adblock via new @PageFair report. Read more >> Click To Tweet

In the face of consumers pelted with ads day in and day out, content marketing swoops in like a breath of fresh air. It provides value for their lives, isn't intrusive, and aims to be helpful above promotional (*insert praise-hands emoji here*).

4. Almost half of 18- to 49-year-old people get their news and information online – and those numbers are growing.

A 2016 Pew Research Center study shows that people are regularly turning away from TV as the main source of their news and information. Instead, they're logging onto the internet.

If you're like The Little Mermaid and want to be where the people are, your brand marketing needs to be online. The best way to go about it, the way that people overwhelmingly prefer? Content marketing.

Social media, blogs, and search engines – these places are where you'll find users who want to get informed. These channels also happen to be where content marketing does most of its work (and works its magic).

5. Small businesses with blogs get 126% more lead growth than small businesses without.

A whopping 77% of internet users read blogs. Combine that stat with the fact that small businesses with blogs see more lead growth. Now you're onto something.

Small businesses that blog get 126% more lead growth than small businesses that do not blog. @impactbnd Click To Tweet

Regular blogging is a go-to content marketing strategy for a reason – it works.

6.  After reading recommendations on a blog, 61% of U.S. online consumers made a purchase.

Content marketing builds trust in a way that no other method can match. Building trust over time means consumers pay attention and listen to your brand's voice.

61% of U.S. online consumers have made a purchase based on recommendations from a blog. @impactbnd @JuliaEMcCoy Click To Tweet

That is incredibly, ridiculously powerful. It's subtly persuasive without being in your face. It's built on transparency and a down-to-earth approach. It's content marketing.

7. Content marketing rakes in conversion rates six times higher than other methods.

Traditional marketing is starting to look a little sad at this point, but let's keep going. Content marketing, among all the other benefits, also drives higher conversions. In fact, it has six times the power of traditional marketing for converting people into leads and leads into customers.

#Contentmarketing rakes in conversion rates six times higher than other methods via @ABGEssentials. Click To Tweet

Content marketing may require more time, patience, and effort over the long haul, but the rewards are far greater.

8. The most effective SEO technique? Content creation.

Populating websites with blog content is how you end up with 434% more search engine-indexed pages than other business sites that don't publish content.

Websites w/blog content have 434% more search engine-indexed pages than those that don't publish. @TechClient Click To Tweet

The result of content creation: You have lots of little pathways sprinkled over the internet that lead back to your site. And, the more content you create around topics relevant to your audience, the better your chances of boosting traffic from search and nabbing conversions.

9. Businesses publishing 16-plus posts a month get almost 3.5 times more traffic than businesses publishing zero to four articles Publishing 16+ blog posts a month brings 3.5x more traffic than publishing 0 to 4 articles via @HubSpot. Click To Tweet

You want leads? Guess what.

Does it need saying? Even if it doesn't bear repeating, here you go. One more time for the people in the back: Content marketing, content creation, and blogging lead to leads. Lots of leads.

It takes an investment, but the returns are real.

Bottom line: Skilled, consistent content marketing works

Content marketing is the present and future of marketing. It's efficient, compelling, and subtly persuasive. It also can be less expensive. Best of all, it works, as these nine statistics prove beyond a doubt.

Of course, like any strategy, content marketing requires skill, persistence, and consistency to work.

This is perhaps the No. 1 secret to getting results like those outlined. You have to work for it. But, oh, is it worth it.

4 Budgeting Basics in Video Marketing Strategy

In this blog post, I want to look at the thorny issue of budgeting in video marketing. This is often something we get asked about and keeping a handle on the growing demands of running developed video content campaigns across multiple platforms, is something that requires a lot of careful planning and often some difficult decision making.

That being said, there are some golden rules when it comes to budgeting for video marketing and I want to explore four of them here.

We really overstate how important it is to plan when creating video content

Plan, Plan and Plan some more

One of the absolute fundamentals of any video marketing strategy (or any kind of marketing strategy for that matter) is having a proper plan in place. The scale and scope of your planned video content will dictate how much budget you will need to allocate towards it. If your budget is limited then you must manage your expectations and this must be reflected in your planning. Knowing your budget from the outset is therefore extremely important as it will allow you to put together a realistic as well as a robust video marketing plan and content calendar.

Part of your strategic planning should involve segmenting your planned video content

Segmenting your Video Content

Part of your strategic planning should involve segmenting your planned video content according to the help, hub, hero content spectrum. I've discussed help, hub, hero before in this blog and in guest articles for the likes of Jeff Bullas and Search Engine People, so I won't go into too much detail here.

Recommended for You

What I will say though, is that when it comes to budgeting, content segmentation is extremely important. Regularity and consistency are key to any successful video marketing strategy. Being able to plan a detailed calendar showing your periodical hub and help videos, as well as those rarer but more expensive hero videos, will allow you to create realistic budgets that make the best use of your resources.

Identify Cost Savings and Efficiencies

Identify Cost Savings and Efficiencies

One of the problems many businesses will face is the fact that the demand for video content online is outstripping budgets available to produce it. This is putting huge pressure on SMEs to find cheaper and more cost efficient ways of producing regular video content that is engaging and relevant to their audiences. We've listed a few ways you can realise some of these cost savings:

  • In-house content production: A lot of very popular video content that companies can produce doesn't have to have high production values. This can include interviews, testimonials, behind the scenes, how-tos, etc. Some of this content can be produced largely in-house by your own team.
  • Using a video production agency: Of course, working with a video production company will have its advantages and paradoxically (given the last bullet point) this too can help you save money. Full-service video production companies will be able to help you plan and will identify cost savings you can make across the course of a campaign, such as repurposing content and filming content for multiple films in one shoot. With in-house capabilities, they also have the ability to find economies of scale.
  • Repurposing content: One film shoot does not have to equal one single piece of content. If you plan carefully, a film shoot has the potential to deliver you an asset you can repurpose over and over again. Think about creating a preview of your brand film to show on social media, or using stills from the shoot on your Instagram. You could even film behind the scenes footage alongside the main shoot and then release it on your YouTube channel.
  • Behind the scenes at Aspect

Work with a Video Production Company

There's a lot to be said for working with an experienced video production agency, especially one that offers a complete video content strategy and video activation service. Whilst there are obvious outlays when it comes to using their services, economies of scale can be found and it's hard to put a price on the experience, skills and knowledge they can bring to the table.

Ultimately, when it comes to video marketing, half measures are just not worth it and won't deliver the kind of ROI you need to make your investment in time and resources worth it. Saving money is one thing but cutting costs when it comes to quality is a false economy. Working with a video production company will take a lot of pressure off your own in-house marketing function, allowing you to divert resources to where they can be better spent. They will also have the experience to be able to give you a realistic view of what you can achieve with your budget.

How to search out the right emoji strategy for your brand

Editor's Note: The following is a guest post from Neil Dawson, sales and marketing director at Ayima.

Back in the late nineties, when emojis first started to appear on our smartphones, it was hard to imagine that these little Unicode images could hold so much importance across generations. But it's fair to say that emojis are taking the world by storm. Generation Z is even recognizing the commercial appeal, with shops stocked with emoji merchandise and even the release of an emoji-themed movie this summer.

So, what are emojis? Why do we have such an affinity with them? And how are they being used by brands to drive customer engagement?

    An emoji love affair

Ninety-two percent of all internet users use emojis every day, according to some industry analysts. In a world driven by fast-paced, frequent communication, emojis fill a gap. A single image can express our emotional state, views and even location, in a much quicker and, sometimes, more precise way than words alone.

As of July 2017, there are 2,666 emojis in the Unicode standard readily accessible via iOS, Android and Windows platforms. Apple has even started releasing its own emojis exclusively for communication between Apple's devices, featuring a sandwich, a zebra and a genie, to name just a few from the most recent release.

And, of course, brands are joining the emoji conversation as well.

We've seen some great examples of emojis being used in advertising campaigns, such as the McDonald's "good times" large print advertising campaign:

Twitter is another popular channel for emoji use in conversations.  The advertising team at Twitter hasn't missed a trick with this and has enabled large brands to develop their own emojis for use within the site. The first was Coca-Cola with their #ShareaCoke campaign, where the use of the hashtag automatically inserts a distinct emoji icon.

Several other brands have since followed, but at a substantial cost, rumored to be in seven figures, according to Adweek sources.

Those looking to use the standard suite of emojis, include WWF who racked up over 35,000 retweets with its endangered emoji campaign, using only the standard selection of animal emojis to highlight the plight of their real-life counterparts:

And NHS Organ Donation cleverly uses the "growing heart" emoji in its Twitter name, with the emoji holding startling significant meaning for the organization.

Brands quote several reasons for getting involved in the emoji conversation, including increasing brand awareness, creating eye-catching campaigns, increasing interaction with their customers and also saving time.

A good example of time-saving capability is perfectly displayed in Domino's use of the pizza emoji. Following a short registration, customers can tweet the pizza emoji to Domino's whenever they want their favorite pizza billed and delivered.

The results are clear. A 2016 report by LeanPlum and App Annie shows that app owners can expect an 85% increase in open rates where emojis are used in push notifications. We regularly see emojis used in paid search with proven effect and it seems that organic search may well be following the same pattern.

    Leveraging emojis for search

Shortly after launching emoji capability in search, Google took it down again. There were various speculations at the time as to why this happened, including the view that emojis were being misused in title tags and generating disingenuous search results. But in February 2017, they were back, and brands are starting to get to grips with how this functionality might benefit them. Bing and Yahoo also have emoji search capability, but your search engine results page (SERP) may vary hugely according to the search engine selected, the emoji used and your additional surrounding text.

Take the French fries emoji, for example. After an initial reference to the Wikipedia definition, Google will display a long list of results relating to the emoji itself, with most of the linked sites showing the emoji image in the title tag:

    Ayima

Whereas Bing displays a list of French fries recipes:

    Ayima

If you expand the search in Google to include the phrase "near me," restaurant selections are displayed. Although, past the first few location-based searches, they often aren't all that local.

    Ayima

In a search on Google using the rabbit emoji, only one search result displays the rabbit emoji and the rest seem to reference the word 'rabbit.'

    Ayima

Whereas the inclusion of the text 'to buy,' delivers useful local search results:

    Ayima

Should emoji SEO form a part of your online marketing strategy?

The jury is still out on how Google is using emojis in its search algorithms. From the simple search examples shown here, you can see that each icon may be treated completely differently, according to the search engine used and any surrounding text used in combination with the emoji.

In fact, just by focusing on your keyword phrases, and not using emoji images at all, you could be tapping into the emoji search market. If Google is simply using the common descriptor for the emoji, rather than the image itself, then you could very well already be accessing this market.

That said, there is clearly an indication that Google is using the emoji itself within the search results, as Twitter does in its search functionality. In which case, if there is an emoji that is truly relevant to your business it could be good practice to feature this within the content of your website.

    Keep it targeted

Bringing emojis into your search marketing strategy will only work if it fits with your target audience. At the very basic level, your audience needs to be searching using emojis to start with, and this style of communication needs to resonate with them. If you're selling to Gen Z and millennials, if your brand is fun, friendly, light-hearted and design-led or if there is a clear emoji that speaks your brand values, then this might be a channel that could consider engaging with.

It's also worth bearing in mind that emojis are more easily accessible through the touch keypad displayed on tablets and smartphones. It's highly likely that most emoji-based search will be taking place via these devices, rather than laptops or PCs, so it's something to bear in mind when you are optimizing pages for emoji search.

    A word of caution

You must be clear on the meanings of chosen emojis across territories and you have to ensure that they are relevant to your brand. Most importantly they have to add something to your message. Although the fascination with emojis doesn't appear to be abating anytime soon, like any trend it can be overused and marred by misuse.

As new emojis are released through Unicode updates we wonder how brands will use them to their benefit. The pizza slice emoji is already starting to gain acceptance as part of the Dominos brand and the burger with McDonald's. Which emoji will be claimed next?
