Google to Lose Search Market Share? Microsoft Predicts Huge Gains for Bing

Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system has the potential to lead to significant gains in search market share for Bing, or so the company predicts in an announcement today.

The new operating system puts Bing at the forefront, which is a change the company says will lead to query volume gains from 10 to 15 percent as early as September.

Microsoft is framing this as good news for Bing advertisers, suggesting there will be "significant volume" in time for holiday campaigns.

If that ends up being the case, it could end up being a blow to Google's search market share.

Gains are predicted to come from new users, as well as current users who will end up using Bing more frequently as a result of the changes in Windows 10.

"We're estimating query volume gains from 10 to 15 percent as early as September — not only from new users, but from existing Bing users who will now use Bing more frequently."

Windows 10 comes with a new desktop search bar that is powered by the company's own search engine, Bing, and voice-activated assistant, Cortana.

In addition, the new Microsoft Edge browser comes built with new features that could lead to an increase in Bing searches.

For example, the ability to highlight text and conduct a search on the highlighted subject is a particularly useful addition that could prove to be popular among Windows users.

Bing search is also coming to more devices via the Cortana app on iOS and Android.

"With the Cortana app on iOS and Android, Bing will draw in new users, and continue to expand our overall search and mobile search share."

Microsoft bringing its search assistant to other devices is the equivalent of Apple releasing a Siri app on Android, but in doing so the company hopes to attract new users to its search engine.

The Cortana app can fulfill more than just search queries — its cross-device functionality allows it to connect with Windows PCs to keep information like calendar appointments in sync across all devices.

Microsoft has high hopes for Bing, as it states the integration into more devices will lead to nothing but growth for the search engine.

"…we expect continued growth in Bing traffic into the foreseeable future."

These are bold predictions considering Windows 10 just launched today. We'll see when next quarter's numbers come how much Microsoft's new OS means to Bing's growth.

The Holy Grail of Startup Marketing: Search, Social and Content

Where do you start, with marketing, when you're about to launch your product or service? This is possibly the most asked question when it comes to startup marketing, and one Guy Kawasaki once famously weighed in on, saying, "Sales fixes everything."

Related: The Psychology Behind Why We Like, Share and Comment on Facebook (Infographic)

Certainly, in today's context, that's true: Sales is about driving inbound leads to your business. But Kawasaki also added this: "If you have more money than brains, you should focus on outbound marketing. If you have more brains than money, you should focus on inbound marketing."

So, where should you begin? Three of the most important channels to consider if you want to drive traffic to your product's website and increase sales, are Search, Social and Content.

It's not one or the other, but all three that you must do simultaneously to get maximum benefits. The reason: They're all interlinked and often you'll have to use one channel to help amplify the other:

Search

Organic search still makes up about 64 percent of referral traffic to a website. Accordingly, SEO or search engine optimization continues to be relevant to your marketing efforts because content marketing alone will not rank you higher in Google searches; your content needs to be as well optimized for search as as your website.

There are two core SEO components to pay close attention to: on-page and off-page optimization.

On-page optimization: If your website is slow to load, is not optimized for mobile and isn't providing a good user experience (high bounce rate), you'll be left wondering why your website doesn't draw organic traffic from Google. Google wants the best possible experience for users -- meaning that people who are looking for something should arrive at their desired result in the least amount of time. This is how Google ensures that its own product remains relevant to its huge user base.

But if your particular website isn't relevant to a user searching for the keywords you're optimizing for, or if users are hitting the back button in their browsers the moment they land on your site, Google will ensure it doesn't come up in user searches for those terms.

Off-page optimization: Once you've ensured that your website is well optimized, you need to start building an authority for your domain and its pages. Domain Authority (DA) is a website metric developed by Moz. It is one of the most important numbers known to SEO. The greater your DA, the more likely you are to have strong traffic and high rank.

The most important off-page factor that influences your domain's authority is your ability to get fresh and good backlinks to your website from higher DA websites (with a minimum DA score of 25) and, at the same time, get rid of bad links.

For a detailed understanding of how search works, download the Beginners Guide to SEO by Moz.

Social

The more that people share your content, the better it is for your Google ranking. Not just that: Creating viral content for social media also helps you get organic traffic from different social media channels where most of your audience is active.

Here are the important components that will help you leverage social in the most effective way to drive organic traffic, as well as aid in search rankings.

Selecting the right channel(s): Not all of your audience will be across all channels; you must pick one that engages the largest segment of your audience.

Creating a strategy: Once you identify what type of content that will most resonate with your audience, one that isn't overtly self-promotional, you will find it easier to sustain and grow your fan following.

Be consistent: It takes time to build a strong loyal following in bigger numbers, and the only way to build one is to be consistent in your social media strategy.

Build a community: Once you successfully create a community, you will have a loyal following of highly engaged, targeted audience members whom you can market to (subtly) over a period of time. For instance, HubSpot created Inbound.org.

Don't post only your own content: The last thing you want to be perceived as is someone who only blows his (or her) own horn. When sharing content across social media, keep a mix of curated content and your own.

Content

Content is at the heart of any marketing initiative -- be it social media or your efforts to optimize for search. Across marketing channels, the one thing that your audience engages with is content.

Here's some proof why content sells: In one study, 71 percent of B2B marketers used content marketing to generate leads, and content marketing generated three times as many leads as traditional outbound marketing, but cost 62 percent less.

Meanwhile, pay attention to the key components of effective content marketing to generate more traffic, build a brand and increase sales.

Set the objective: Write down your objectives clearly -- what is the desired result of content marketing. Is it to get more traffic, build brand recognition through thought leadership, increase signups to your mailing list or build a personal brand?

Create a writing mix: Play with different formats without limiting yourself to plain text. Videos and visual content are known to be more engaging than plain text-based articles.

Plan on 20 percent writing, 80 percent promotion: Two really good, detailed posts a week packed with value can bring more traction than five shorter and non in-depth pieces will. Spend 20 percent of your time writing those two awesome pieces of content a week and the balance of your time amplifying it.

Understand the connection between Search and Social: Writing great content that addresses or answers your audiences' queries (typically, keywords associated with your SEO) will help in ranking you higher on search engines. The more people who find your content of value, the more they'll be likely to share -- sending Google the signal that a particular article is of value to readers, and thus pushing it up in rankings.

Good content also provides fodder for your social media marketing.

If you hit on both channels, you'll be well on your way to reaching that "holy grail" of marketing.

The evolution of SEO

As of late, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding SEO -- whether it ceases to exist, if it's now blended into the tactics better known as "content marketing," or if it still remains essential, and predominantly a set of website-centric tasks. By now, I'm sure we've all heard the phrase, "SEO is dead." While yes, we may be in agreement that certain aspects of traditional search engine optimization are no longer relevant, SEO is certainly not dead. It is simply evolving, and we, as marketers, experience the changes on a continual basis. Content marketing strategy has emerged as the ultimate roadmap to drive engagement in every channel. Will our old definition of SEO survive this transition? Certainly not. However, we can instead formulate a new understanding of what it means to optimize for search while creating valuable consumer experiences through content.

The past

When we think about the traditional pillars of SEO, they're often broken down into these three categories:

Search engine optimization was considered to be a very technical process -- worshipping the then-simpler algorithms to generate top search ranking, and carefully pinpointing the tactics to boost website traffic. It was about removing technical obstacles, stuffing our content with specific keywords, and excessively linking -- focusing solely on rank.

However, as marketers, we recognize there are several factors that have driven dramatic change in the way we define our SEO strategies.

The present

Proven and established best practices remain a part of SEO, but search engines today have transformed their algorithms to reflect a much different kind of value than we've seen in the past: user experience. With updates to Google like Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird, brands have been required to adjust their content strategies to reflect not only an improved search engine, but to shift the focus to a new audience -- the end-user, rather than the search engine spider.

SEO is no longer just an effort to be No. 1 for your designated search terms, but rather it has evolved into a much broader landscape of idea and information sharing. What we like to categorize as "content" and "authority" have emerged as more critical components in understanding the successful approach to SEO. Today, content is often evaluated by its usefulness, relevancy, and educative value -- in other words, its ability to genuinely engage searchers, influencers, and social media audiences alike. By monitoring consumer insights, we are able to clearly identify audiences and give them access to content tailored to their specific interests. That's how great brand experiences occur, which then stimulate conversions.

As content marketing and SEO strategies are evolving, so too does our notion of ranking. While the coveted No. 1 ranking in the SERP was once deemed the ultimate recognition of SEO success, today we have substituted the concept of "ranking" with "visibility". What do we mean by visibility? It means capturing as much "non-paid" real estate on the search engines results page as possible (i.e., answer box, knowledge graph, image carousel, etc.). It also means having a reach far beyond just the SERP, extended to touch audiences across different content platforms, social media channels, and devices. It's giving people the chance to find, connect with, and learn from your content in the places they seek it. In addition to the broader, conceptual understanding of visibility, we all must think about it in the physical sense. Mobile visibility has become particularly significant, as consumers continue to change their online behavior and engagement patterns. Search experts have certainly ha rped on the importance of mobile optimization, and rightfully so. This evolution cannot be ignored.

Marketers and SEO practitioners have become more deeply aligned with these new methods of SEO and, in turn, have implemented strong content marketing strategies to bolster them. As we continue on this path and glance ahead, we must continue to create content not for search engines, but for people.

The future

Let us take a step into the future of the SEO landscape -- in fact, the term "search engine optimization" may no longer exist on its own at all. For all intents and purposes, let's call it what it is: content marketing. Content marketing will no longer be seen as the driver of a single channel, rather it will be the driver of all channels. We will leave methods of optimizing for channel-specific engagement behind. This will mean breaking down the internal silos within an organization, and allowing different marketing segments to function synergistically. It means that data scientists, writers, and content creators will work together on these strategies.

More and more, consumers have demonstrated that they value interactivity. We can no longer assume that the everyday consumer is going to be engaged by a static, text-based piece of content on their desktop. And their expectations only increase by the day. As they travel through their omnichannel journeys of brand engagement and product exploration, consumers will want content that adapts. A piece of content should travel seamlessly through the channels right alongside the people who view it. More than anything, content will become an experience.

Closing thoughts

As we look back on the SEO of the past and move forward towards a content marketing future, we have undoubtedly traveled a long, complex path. Though our methods have changed, our goals have perhaps remained relatively similar. We have always desired the visibility a good SEO strategy generates, but today we recognize that that visibility has taken on a much more thorough definition. As the marketing and consumer worlds continue to evolve, we must all participate in a greater conversation about content. If SEO is evolving, so must marketers. Adapt and survive…it's the only way!

10 Amazing Affiliate Marketing Blogs

Affiliate marketing isn't a new trend. It's been around for years. In fact, Amazon Associates, which is one of the first online affiliate marketing programs, has been in use since 1996. However, with advances in technology like the rise of mobile devices, affiliate marketing is evolving extremely quickly.

This means that if you haven't considered affiliate marketing in the past, it may be time to give it another look.

What is Affiliate Marketing? affiliate-marketing.jpg

Before we go any further, what exactly is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a way for a blogger or anyone involved in online marketing to make money by promoting products and services in exchange for a commission from the sales or leads they drive. This is usually accomplished when a merchant or web advertiser places a banner ad, button, or link onto a website site. The webmaster will be compensated when a visitor clicks on that link or makes a purchase through that link.

The Pros of Affiliate of Marketing

While making some additional income sound great to most of us, affiliate marketing does present some appealing benefits.

  • It's quick and easy to set-up. Find an affiliate program that fits within your niche, sign-up, and paste the tracking code onto your site. That's not to say it doesn't involve any sort of effort, however.
  • You don't need to be a marketer. Don't worry if you don't have a marketing background. Most programs provide you with all the materials and handle all of the marketing and transactions.
  • Reach a larger audience. Affiliate programs already come equipped with a built-in audience.
  • Small investment. You don't need to purchase an inventory and most programs are free to join.
  • Steady income. Once you understand affiliate marketing you can earn a steady income as you have an internet connection. Best of all? It's something that you can do on the side.
  • The Cons of Affiliate Marketing

That's not to say that are some problems with affiliate marketing. And here are some of the most common concerns.

  • You're not in charge. Since the program is running the show, you really have no control of the offers and products or services.
  • High commission. Since affiliate marketing involves a middleman, they get a cut of the money you make.
  • Lots of competition. There hundreds, if not thousands, of affiliates. This means that it can be difficult to stand out from everyone and you'll be competing against seasoned marketers.
  • Pay on sale. You could drive a ton of traffic to the merchant's site, but you only get paid when a sale is completed. Even worse, if the merchant loses a sale because of a bad offer, you still miss out on the sale.
  • Scams. There are a lot of fraudulent affiliate programs out there. So you need to be careful when choosing a merchant.
  • If you're still interested in affiliate marketing, you may want to check out the advice from the following ten bloggers, in no particular order. Each of them have years of experience and success with affiliate marketing, so you can definitely learn a thing or two from them.

Disclaimer: These bloggers are not affiliated with Search Engine Journal.

In 2007, life was pretty good for Pat Flynn. He was a senior drafter in a Bay Area architecture firm, a job that he loved. When the economy slowed in 2008, Pat was laid off and forced to think of another way to make a living. He took his experience of studying for the LEED – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – and launched a blog (GreenExamAcademy.com) that shared his study notes. This lead Pat to publish his first e-book, which resulted in $8,000 of income during its first month. Since then Pat has launched the Smart Passive Income Blog and the popular Smart Passive Podcast.

Pat believes that affiliates, and businesses as a whole, should be both ethical and transparent. This means that Pat only recommends products that he's passionate and familiar about. He also uses four concepts when working with affiliate networks: provide massive value, earn massive trust, learn and understand the needs and wants of your followers, and lead and teach by example.

John Chow has had one interesting journey. At the age of seven he moved from China to Canada, survived the dot-com crash, launched TechZone in 2008, and started his first blog in 2005. By 2008, John figured out how to monetize his blog which went from a monthly income of $353 to $300,000 annually.

Today, John pretty much blogs about how you can make money from blogs. He's also recognized as a leading authority figure, a best-selling author on Amazon, and founder of TTZ Media, Inc.

John's success can attributed to teaming up with the right affiliate programs and staying on top of the services that can help you monetize your blog. For example, in 2007 he made approximately $3,800 by writing reviews through ReviewMe. In 2012, he joined MOBE and became their biggest affiliate after only six months.

Shoemoney was founded by Jeremy Shoemaker back in 2003, but Jeremy had already proven to be an innovative businessman. While he was attending Western Illinois University, he started his first business which sold Macintosh games, which was followed by NextPimp.com. By 2006, he was named the Best Affiliate Marketing Blog by a little publication called Search Engine Journal. In 2007, Jeremy teamed up with David Dellanave to start the eBay affiliate service AuctionAds – which was named the "eBay Most Innovative Application-Buyer" at the 6th annual eBay Developers Conference.

According to SEJ founder Loren Baker,

"Shoemoney has taken affiliate marketing to the next level by publishing his real life experiences on his Shoemoney blog and his Webmasterradio.fm Show, Net Income. He's become the unofficial talking head of affiliate marketing, arbitrage, and monetization among the search community and at the same time developed a business around it."

Matthew Woodward began his career at the age of thirteen when he started reviewing games for a site NintendoPhiles. This lead to Matthew launching a web-based community where people could share demos of their games. After a stint as the head of online marketing for a large distributor in Europe, Matthew went into business for himself to develop and rank websites. His blog has since been recognized by the following: HubSpot Top 5 Internet Marketing Blog March 2015, Affiliate Summit Best Affiliate Blog 2013, Technorati Top 100 Business Blog July 2013, and The Best Of Search Engine Journal 2012.

Matthew's blog provides quality advice, tutorials, and case studies based on his experience with online and affiliate marketing that can help you achieve your goals, as opposed to just sharing the offers that bring in the highest commissions.

After her son suffered a massive pediatric stroke in 1998, Rae Hoffman founded a non-profit website that served as a support group for parents and families of pediatric stroke survivors. Luke Kling started blogging in 2004 and is now the Affiliate Manager for PeerFly, Inc. PeerFly is an affiliate ad network that uses custom-built software. His blog is separate from PeerFly, Inc. but it still provides more than enough advice for affiliate marketers. For example, Luke has created The Affiliate Marketing Guide that shares tips on getting started and how to successfully run marketing campaigns on Facebook.

What's appealing about Luke's blog is that he discusses how you can make money online by selling shirts to capturing the attention of your site's visitors through tools like Engagifire.

Having been involved with affiliate marketing since 1997, Shawn Collins is one of the most influential minds in the industry. During his career, Shawn co-founded the Affiliate Summit, is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of FeedFront Magazine, host of the 7 Minutes in Affiliate Heaven show, and a best-selling author.

Shawn's Affiliate Marketing Blog provides the latest industry news and advice on how to make money online. Like many other bloggers on this list, Shawn is honest in saying that you won't get rich through affiliate marketing, but you can make a little extra cash on the side. He also only endorses the products and services that he uses himself, so you can rest assured that these are quality products/services.

Martin Osborn, better known as Finch, is a high school dropout who discovered affiliate marketing in early 2009 while employed as a web developer. Within a week he was making more than £1000 per day and decided to quit his day job. He hasn't looked back since.

Finch Sells is a great resource if you're new to affiliate marketing, since Finch describes how he got started with affiliate marketing, explains how the industry is segmented and provides advice on how you can begin in an easy-to-understand and comical way. He also provides a priceless Survival Kit and a list of resources that ranges from blogs to events to tools.

Following his graduation from Georgia Tech in 2007 and stuck in a cubicle, Charles gave internet marketing a chance. However, after learning the hard way, Charles stumbled into affiliate marketing.

After a few months, Charles was able to convert $4,000 into $1,000,000+ in profit. Of course, there were some hiccups along the way. Charles launched 14 unsuccessful campaigns and lost $4,000 before he found success. What makes Charles unique is he's open about his failures and uses that to help advise anyone interested in affiliate marketing. Not only does his blog offer affiliate and marketing tips, Charles also shares lifestyle and career advice.

Missy Ward has been involved with affiliate marketing since 1999 and co-founded Affiliate Summit with Shawn Collins in 2003 on a mere $400 investment. Affiliate Summit is now a multi-million dollar company that produces conferences, tradeshows, FeedFront Magazine, GeekCast.fm, and AffStat.com. Missy is also the co-founder of itsaWAHMthing.com, founder of AffiliateMarketersGiveBack.com and is in charge of a number of her own niche affiliate websites.

4 WAYS TO WIN AT SMALL BUSINESS MARKETING

Many small business owners have little to no experience in marketing, design, or how to cost-effectively promote their business in today's digital age.

Some may have started their company years ago when phone books were the go-to search engine, and social media marketing was non-existent. Without an in-house marketing department or the budget to hire an outside agency, the small business owner often feels at a disadvantage.

But right now is the most opportune time in history for a small business to build their brand with creative, compelling, cost-efficient advertising. The internet and mobile devices have provided consumers with access to information on a scale never seen before. Companies that invest in technology, content and advertising to reach this exponentially growing audience will likely succeed the fastest.

Small business owners who practice these 4 Ways to Win at Small Business Marketing can gain a competitive advantage by crafting a unique me ssage, making informed purchasing decisions, and utilizing today's technology before, or better than, the competition.

    #1 – Communicate Creatively

"Kodak sells film, but they don't advertise film. They advertise memories." -Ted Levitt

Consumers judge a book by its cover. Your company's website, print media and branded products are often the first, and sometimes only, opportunity to convey a high-perceived value for your brand. Having an aesthetically pleasing print ad, pleasant user-experience on the web, thoughtful, unique promotional products and professional presentation is the quickest way to winning their trust, admiration or consideration.

80% of decision-makers prefer information on products and services in a series of articles versus an advertisement. They don't want to be sold – they want to be educated. Communicating creatively means you stop selling and start serving your audience with beneficial content and intelligen t messaging paired with eye-catching, thought-provoking, and emotionally engaging design.

    #2 – Engage Electronically

89% of consumers use search engines for purchase decisions.

Yet only 45% of small businesses have a website. The "lost opportunity cost" for not having a search-engine optimized or mobile-friendly website increases every day as more and more consumers become familiar not only with searching for products and services online, but purchasing them directly from mobile devices.

I suspect fear of the unknown keeps many small business owners from engaging in online advertising campaigns, or becoming one of the 40 million active small business pages on Facebook. The time investment and budget management for SEO/SEM and complexity of PPC can be daunting. Is it more cost-effective for you to outsource managing your web presence?

    #3 – Invest Intelligently

50% of small businesses spend less than $300 per month on online advertising.

Advertising is often looked at as an expense, rather than an investment. With limited time and capital to invest, small business owners are often torn between daily operations and making payroll; researching keywords and learning a content management platform is not on their priority list. Investing intelligently may mean hiring a digitally proficient employee to manage your online presence, or a marketing professional to enhance it.

Hiring a dishonest search engine optimization service provider, usually the ones that "guarantee getting you on the first page of Google results" in your e-mail box, can have a devastating effect on your company's web presence. If a deal is too good to be true, it usually is. Finding a reputable and experienced marketing professional will save you the time and money a bad experience will cost you. Invest, and delegate, intelligently.

    #4 – Tactical Targeting

"Customers buy for their rea sons, not yours." -Orvel Ray Wilson

Knowing how and where to reach those most likely to purchase your products and services, and understanding the problems your company needs to solve for each segment of that audience, is key. While the investment for optimized mailing lists, printing and mail processing were considerable in the past, EDDM mailing, online advertising and e-mail marketing have lowered the cost of entry and cost-per-acquisition considerably.

Advancements in technology, reduction in print costs and competition in the digital market have made tactical targeting easier and more effective than ever before. Utilizing variable data printing, different postcard designs for different segments, and industry-specific landing pages to personalize the experience are all effective and affordable tactics to increase open, response and conversion rates.
